Castlewood Country Club ~ Where Memories Are Created and Barracudas Are Born!
We Are Family
Castlewood Country Club has been the home of the Barracudas since 1975 and is a family-oriented recreational swim program for children of all ages. The Castlewood Barracudas offer professional training in a fun and friendly environment from March-July at the Castlewood pool. From stroke improvement and conditioning to our family dive-in movie night and pancake breakfast, the Barracuda families work hard, play hard and make lasting friendships.
We Are Experienced
Our head coach, Nels Larsen, is entering his eighth year as a Barracuda along with three Assistant Coaches and Junior Coaches, our experienced coaching staff offer an exceptional program recognized not only for its performance and success but also for its team spirit and fun. Our swimmers love to be in the water and wear their Barracuda suits and caps with pride.
We Are Welcoming
Barracudas must be a member of Castlewood Country Club or referred by a Castlewood member. Non-Castlewood members are welcome at the Club during their swim practice time, meets and team socials. All Barracudas must be capable of swimming freestyle and backstroke across a 25-yard pool and new Barracudas are required to complete an assessment with our Coaching Staff. Castlewood is a beautiful club offering many family membership opportunities so you can enjoy the Club year round.
We Are Volunteers
Our Barracuda families are required to work at least 4 volunteer shifts during the summer season in order to ensure our program runs smoothly. The jobs are easy to follow and offer the best view of the pool for cheering on your Barracudas.
We Are On The Blocks And Ready To Jump In!
Our 2019 Spring Conditioning Program allows swimmers to get back in the water and get a head start on the summer swim season – this program runs March 4 - May 2 on Monday, Wednesday and Thursday afternoons. Summer Swim runs May 6 - July 19 concluding with League Championships and our Swim Team Banquet on July 22. Practice times are afternoons Monday-Thursday until June 1 and switch to mornings Monday-Friday once School is out.

Nels Larsen: Head Coach
Nels is in his eighth year as the Castlewood head coach. Nels is a high school physical education teacher at Irvington High School in Fremont and has been coaching swimming since 1994. In 1996, Nels moved to Pleasanton and started coaching the boys and girls swim teams at Irvington High School. During that time, Nels also coached the Mission Highland’s Summer Team that is well known for being a competitive team, but is better known for its team spirit and fun.
As a swimmer, Nels started as a summer league swimmer in San Jose, swam through high school and then went on to swim for Cal-State Hayward and finished his collegiate swim career at Cal-State Bakersfield. Nels is looking forward to helping all of the Castlewood swimmers reach their potential and have fun at the same time.
Lauren Smith: Assistant Coach
Lauren began her swimming career in 1993 at age 7, participating in a local summer rec team. She swam for four years at Irvington High School (Coach Nels was her coach!), and continued to swim through college. She swam two years for Ohlone Jr. College and one year at Cal State East Bay. While swimming at CSUEB, she began coaching for a year-round team, the East Bay Bat Rays. She coached their 8 and under group for six years, while working to get her teaching credentials and Master’s Degree. She is currently a first grade teacher at James Leitch Elementary in Fremont, and is excited to be back on the pool deck doing what she loves to do.
Linda Bailey: Assistant Coach
Linda began her competitive swimming career at age 8 and swam 4 years varsity for Mission San Jose High School in Fremont. She continued swimming in college, first for Cal State East Bay then earned a full swimming scholarship to Cal State Bakersfield where she was a 3-time NCAA Division II All-American. Linda has more than 25 years of teaching and coaching experience in the aquatics field. She is currently the Director of Training and Development for the American Swim Academy.
Linda’s love for children and swimming keeps her actively involved in the swimming community. She is especially passionate about making swimming fun while developing good technical skills for her swimmers. Linda has extensive experience with child development and was an elementary/middle school teacher before she chose a full time career in swimming.
Eligibility for the swim team is simple. A swimmer must be a member of a family with a Castlewood Country Club membership, as defined by the Castlewood Country Club Bylaws (grandchildren of members are also eligible) or referred by a Member. Each swimmer must be capable of swimming freestyle across a 25-yard pool (stopping and resting periodically is okay), comply with the league rules including not participating in a USS swim program after Dec. 31 (high school swimmers are okay), and be willing to have fun.
